I got into the Lords of the Underworld because I loved Ashlyn and Maddox's story. Ashlyn's self-sacrifice and Maddox's transformation was very touching, and it reeled me in. But with each successive book, the writing got cheesier and the plot got more holes. Olivia and Aeron's story in Darkest Passion restored my faith a little in the series, but this installment left me disappointed yet again.

The Lords are stronger together than they are apart, yet what do they do when the Hunters are poised to attack the fortress (yet again)? They scatter and leave their defenses slim. Granted, They should hide away the artifacts, but this story was poorly executed. Gideon picks the worst time to steal away and romance the truth out of his lady, and Scarlet is an airhead who flits from one decision to another, if she ever could make up her mind.

The Lords have realized that they need a resident doctor several books ago, not only for the vulnerable humans and the pregnant Ashlyn, but for emergencies like Gideon's hand-botomy or the Hunters having an unexpected weapon that could prove deadly to them, but an infinity later, they still don't have one. I suspect the doctor would be one of the Lords' mate at one point, but it seriously poses a gaping vulnerability. One that could easily be solved if they put the tiniest amount of effort into it. Surely Anya, William, and the whole slew of other immortals know of ONE immortal doctor they could call upon. But no, let's just leave it for now, even though we have a female who is about to give birth soon, as far as they knew, but thankfully has her due date delayed due to the unexpected news that she's carrying immortals that require a longer gestation period.

But don't worry! The author distracts the readers by the excessive mention of Robert Pattinson, as if the mere mention of the actor who plays the sparkliest vamp in existence is enough to make up for the story's shortcomings.

The only bright side is the promise of the coming stories from the other Lords and their respective ladies, but I just couldn't get through this book fast enough.

For paranormal romances that actually have a decent plot you can sink your teeth into, I recommend Kresley Cole and Kelley Armstrong instead.

The Darkest Passion Lords of the Underworld Gena Showalter 9780778303763 Books Reviews

Well, I liked this book but it was VERY confusing at times, but that's my fault. This series definitely needs to read in order. So many people to keep up with. Honestly I skimmed a great deal of it only because half the time I was confused as to what the heck was going on. I read book 1 a very long time ago and I plan on reading the series starting over again. This book just looked so interesting that I had to read it. I gave it a 4 because what I did read was fantastic. Many reviews stated that the h was annoying. I have to agree. It didn't make sense that she would give up everything just for sex with H. She HAD to have known this when she gave her wings for him. That whole thing just didn't work for me BUT the book was still great.
They way these books are written is absolutely beautiful. Congrats to Gena Showalter on such an amazing job! I've seen many people complain that the books are hard to follow and hard to keep track of all of the characters but I honestly don't have a problem with that. I thought I would when I started the first book in this series but I've found its really not that hard as long as you start with the first book in the series.

The darkest passion, though, wow! I have officially found my new favorite Lord but it's sort of a tie now between Reyes, Aeron and Strider (can't wait to read his story!) And I love how each book gives a little insight into the other men and the other things going on but it's rare that they ever go back to one's that have already shared their stories which helps to give small glimpses to what will happen in future books!
4.5-5 stars

This was a great story...I think my favorite of the series so far. I really liked both Gideon and Scarlet and I loved their story.

Scarlet is the daughter of Rhea, the wife of Cronos, the King of the Titans. Unfortunately, Scarlet was the product of Rhea having an affair so both Cronos and Rhea hate Scarlet for something that wasn't her fault. Scarlet was born in Tartarus (prison of the gods) after the Titans were imprisoned and didn't have a good life (especially being imprisoned with Cronos and Rhea). She was also used as a host to the demon of Nightmares and once she escaped Tartarus, she went to Earth and now resides in Budapest, close to the LotU fortress.

Gideon is one of the immortal warriors that were responsible for opening Pandora's box and releasing the demons inside. As a way to imprison the demons and provide punishment for the warriors, the gods decided to make the warriors hosts to the demons. Gideon is host to the demon of lies and experiences great pain and weakness if he tells the truth.

Cronos wants the LotU to hunt down some of the prisoners from Tartarus that have demons in them. They all know that the hunters want to capture any demon inhabited humans and so they're alright with helping Cronos, hopefully getting the new demon host people to help them. Scarlet is in Budapest and so the LotU decide they need to capture her because she's too dangerous to be free so close to their fortress. They capture her but when she's in their dungeons, she communicates through dreams to Gideon. She gets him to come see her and then drops the bomb on him that they were married. Gideon might have thought she was nuts but she reminds him of someone and there's a pull between them that he can't deny. Gideon isn't able to get much more out of her and decides to attempt to win her trust by taking her away from the fortress and spending time with her alone.

Things are interesting because Gideon must tell lies when he speaks. Thankfully, the book itself helps to translate some of the "Gideon speak" and once you get the hang of it, it's kind of fun to keep up with. Gideon is a good guy and he doesn't trust Scarlet at first but there are reasons for it. As the keeper of Lies, Gideon can usually tell when anyone (even gods) are telling the truth or lying. With Scarlet, for some reason, Gideon can't tell if she's telling the truth or not and it makes him leery. That doesn't last very long though and soon Gideon doesn't care about their past, he just wants to be in Scarlet's future. Scarlet isn't so sure though, partially because of their mysterious past and partially because of outside influences that could cause major issues for them both (like Rhea). They do have to get through some tough situations, but Gideon and Scarlet are able to work through things and end the story with a well deserved HEA together.

I greatly enjoyed this story. I liked both Gideon and Scarlet and was pretty much rooting for them from the beginning. I loved how their mysterious past came together and all...that was unexpected but worked well for me. Overall, any complaints are small, I loved the MCs and the story was great and kept me engaged. This is my favorite addition to the series so far. I'd recommend this story and series. D

* note - I listened to the audio version and the narrator did a very good job.
