Because of Him Fortunate Book 1 eBook Jessica Roe Reviews

I bought this book specifically because a review I read expressing outrage that there weren't a million more 5 star reviews made me laugh out loud.

And the laughing didn't stop once I started reading. Seriously, the banter, wit and humor in this book are TOP NOTCH. I actually laughed so loud at one point that I woke my husband up from 2 floors away at 2am (there was no stopping until I finished this, sleep had to wait). I laughed the entire time; even when I teared up (okay, maybe I full on cried for a minute) I was back to laughing within moments. SO. FUNNY. Also, I'm totally adopting several hilarious snippets from this book and adding them into my vocabulary.

I want Blair to be my best friend, for real. Probably one of my favorite female characters ever, and that is not a statement to be taken lightly. There have been too many times that the female lead (most notably in romance genres) gets under my skin for one reason or another, and I wind up wanting to punch them in the face (I'm aware they're fictional, but the desire is there regardless). NOT the case here. She's quick witted, sassy beyond belief, is strong beyond measure and doesn't take crap from anyone. She has been through so much and is yet just a genuinely awesome and hilarious person. Seriously, I want her to exist in reality and I want to be BFFs and double date with her and Silver.

Which leads us to Silver.... Ohhhh Silver. *sigh* The whole nerdy good guy thing is so underrated, because I swooned repeatedly. I was a little leery about the student/teacher thing because *ick*.... But this was done in such a way that I rooted for them the entire time. I'm not going to spoil any of the moments that made me love him, because you deserve to fall for him on your own. But you will, and you'll fall HARD. Plus the hilarity of his actual first name is so great, especially with all the crazy-sexy names the guys in these types of books usually have.

Not to mention that every other secondary character (eventually) found a place in my heart. Zac & Nash were my favorite of her family, but they all grew on me by the end. And the amazingly unique and accepting friends Ibbie, Kip and the rest of the Dramaholics were just too funny!

All in all, I also would like to express outrage that there aren't at least a couple hundred more positive reviews for this book, because it 100% deserves it. I would give 10 stars if I could! I will be forcing my friends to start reading this first thing in the morning, and I will likely read it again before the week is over. It was just that great. Job well done Ms. Roe, I absolutely loved it.
I really enjoyed this book - and all of the stories in this series. This is in fact an author I continually check back on to see if she's written more because I really look forward to each installment.

I can't say I'm overly fond of first person narration or the fact that it has become so prevalent, but Jessica Roe does very well with it and it doesn't detract from the story. The teacher/student plotline is a hard one to do well enough to keep from grossing out all the adults, and she does a great job of both making the relationship believable and making us understand why Blair is so mature and how Silver, a straight laced rule follower, could be so attracted to her and so prone to forgetting himself when he's around her.

There are reviewers who compare this to Colleen Hoover's Slammed, which isn't fair really. About the only similarity is the general conflict of teacher falling for student. I did enjoy Slammed as well, but where Colleen Hoover slides into massive amounts of mellow-drama and overly intricate plot twists, and gives us two sequels analyzing every facet of who knew what when, Jessica Roe's writing is actually far more crisp and the plot line far less twisted, and honestly, more enjoyable because of that. We see Blair and Silver in the sequels and get more insight into their happily ever after, but she doesn't dwell.

I really enjoyed the humor in this book, and I liked the credibility of the characters. She wrote teenagers who didn't annoy me, but were still very realistically teenagers. Blair acts older than her age - but there is solid reasoning to that choice. Silver struggles with actually seeing her as a student, and then struggles with seeing her as the adult she is. It's a messed up situation for him and we see that and get it. And yet it's still humorous and upbeat and enjoyable to read. It can be tough to find good reads in the New Adult genre especially with subject matter like this that can quickly turn creepy. This author did a great job and I really do recommend not only this book, but this whole series.
I think I'm in a very bad pattern. Books that seem so great from the start/blurb/reviews just doesn't cut it in the end. This stiry was no exception unfortunately.
I actually didn't know what this book would be about when I started. But I really enjoyed the intro and the beginning. But then... the male MC was a douche in my opinion. Any sign and he tirned on her pnly to come crawling back to apologize. It got old really fast. The awful family?? Yeah, it was an intersting part of the story first but the conflicts wasn't handled right. I craved much more redemption for how they behaved. There was a very large imbalance in tonality as well. Cheery, light and sweet fun with a background that was anything but in combination with emotionally abusive adults. It feels like the author hadn't decided exactly what kind of story she wanted to tell, and mixed all ideas into one. Sometimes that works, bit I felt a bit cheated by the end.
I fell in love with each and every one of the characters in this book. I loved how the story ran on the edge of wrong but still seemed so right.
