Hanging by a Thread Sophie Littlefield Books
Winston, California has two of it's native children back this summer. Mother and daughter, the Knights have moved back after an absence of ten years. Nana Raley had remained in the town and is delighted to have them back. It was divorce that sent them away, and now the same divorce is what brings them back.Winston isn't the same as it was a decade earlier though. Since then, two shocking murders, each on the others anniversary date, July 4th, has the town scared and tightening up it's police presence. In fact even the annual festival will be held on the 3rd rather than the 4th.
Clare Knight, the daughter, has an ability to touch vintage fabrics and see emotional visions of the previous owner. By chance Clare comes in contact with the damaged denim jacket worn by Amanda Stavros. The visions are powerful and painful. Especially for a sixteen year old trying to fit in with her new school crowd.
Clare has to confide in someone and find out what really happened to these two victims and who did the crimes.
This was a very good book. I was drawn into the story easily and had no issue with credulity. The characters were written with strength and good dialog. Although the sleuth is a teenager, this is an adult novel of crime and why persons commit them. Secrets are what keeps the pain continuing. Clare is determined to bring the secrets out to light.
I will look for other books written by Ms. Littlefield.

Hanging by a Thread Sophie Littlefield Books Reviews
Littlefied writes great books for adults or teens, like "A Bad Day for Sorry" or "Banished." So I picked this up when I was shelving in YA (young adults) and ran across it. It grabbed my attention from the start, and I read it in an evening. It really rates better than a 3, but is not quite a 4.
The premise of a teen (Clare) moving back to her hometown at 16 is always an interesting one. The fact that she has a special ability makes it more difficult since it makes her feel more like a freak. Clare's ability intrudes into her life when it makes her feel compelled to solve it. Of course, she meets a boy who is a little different himself, and they form a good team at the end to solve the case.
She finds her best friend Rachel from the hometown altered in significant ways, but Rachel is her key to being accepted when they go back to school in the fall. At least, she expects that she will be. It's still summer. They start a business selling Clare's clothing creations on Saturdays. Jack is an outsider, nursing wounds of his own. Clare's Grandma and Mother have things to work out, but at least her Grandma has the same gift. She may be able to help Clare deal with her difference.
It's a good story, but the plot doesn't move forward as smoothly as I would expect from an author who has experience with writing better books. At first I thought it must be one of her earlier books, but it's not. It feels as if it may have been written quickly to meet a deadline. The story is good, but a little rough in its progress.
Hanging by a thread is a murder mystery novel with a touch of paranormal. We've got our main protagonist, Clare, who has recently moved back to her mother's hometown. Town is an exaggeration; it is more like a cluster of people living within each other's earshot. Which is why everyone was shocked when a murder occurred in two consecutive years. The whole town is scared, which is why when Clare and her mom moved, the town wasn't welcoming. This is mainly due to the fact that her family line has been known to be a little too para-normal, with creepy freaky things happening. No outsider knows but when Clare touches someone's clothes, she can remember the darkest, most wrongful thing the wearer has committed. Convenient for a town that has witnessed two murders right? That's not what Clare thinks. She just wants to be normal and enjoy designing and sewing her line made form vintage clothes.
I really enjoyed Clare's voice. She wasn't whiny, but life has handed her an unfair hand. She is physically, emotionally, and mentally suffering by getting involved in figuring out who is the murderer, but her guilt would eat her up if she doesn't. I also really liked the mystery behind it; In all honesty I couldn't guess who was the murderer until the very end. Also, you get to witness a little of the dark side of every connected character in the novel when Clare touches a piece of their clothes. This definitely added an aura of mystery and distrust for every character; even the one Clare has started to develop a crush on.
The author's writing was not complicated at all. You get so sucked into the story and there are no complex words to get in the way of your reading. The build up of the plot and the addition of this paranormal theme to a mystery novel all added up my enjoyment level while reading Hanging by a Thread. I would definitely recommend it to all young adult lovers. You get a bit of contemporary, paranormal, and mystery all in one book you don't want to miss out on!
This was a very good book - interesting plot line - very different; but another excellent story from Sophie Littlefield.
The main character in this book is going into her Junior year of high school. All of her friends are in high school. Simple plot with some magic thrown in. I would recommend the book to young readers but not adults.
This book has a lovely teen heroine who models independent thinking and creativity. Written in the first person, she uses sewing and her psychic gift to solve a murder. The sewing and fashion descriptions are detailed enough to appeal to any teen who loves fashion (and wants to use style to make a statement about themselves). There is enough personal depth to her character to hold interest and to make the reader care about her. Well written and highly enjoyable.
