This book was a little odd. I loved how it started out. The hero is supposed to be a serious businessman and the heroine is a gothic hair dresser. He feels he needs to marry an "appropriate" person suiting his station in life and our heroine definitely doesn't fit that bill. I found this to be an intriguing story line and was excited in the beginning. It started going downhill when you found out he was into dominating people including our heroine in and out of bed. He was insanely jealous..to the point of being obsessive and not in the romantic way. I felt it was kind of disturbing how he acted towards her. There was nothing "romantic": about it. The author doesn't even explain much about his background to understand why he is the way he is. I think this is just more an "erotica" novel. So if you love erotica and domination stuff you may like this. I think this author missed a huge opportunity to show how people from 2 different worlds can make things work and fall in love despite their differences.

So that's about it. I loved the almost crazy jealous/possessiveness of Damian. Even though he doesn't want to admit it to himself, he is obsessed with and hooked by Angie from the minute he lays eyes on her. Yes, he does try and ignore her in the beginning but soon sees that's not how it is going to work. Even though he thinks she is the opposite of what he needs in his life, he decides that being selfish and taking what he wants (even just for a while) is more important. But once he starts, is he willing to stop?
Many other reviewers have raised the same issues I've had with Damien, the overcooked, overdone, OTT "alpha". So, I'm going to focus instead on special goth child Angie. Some SPOILERS ahead.

I was excited to read about a goth heroine, but her character is pretty much a physical entity existing for the sole purpose of throwing Damien off-kilter with her "goth-ness". The first couple of chapters set a very different tone because they actually spoke to each other. She was snappy and ballsy, but soon became the useless bumbling mess when faced with the "alpha passion". At the heart of it, Angie is such ridiculous character. She puts a persona and takes it off as a test of Damien's acceptance, when ironically she was actively hiding her "true self". She says Damien is closed off, but apparently all of her character development is happening off page because we don't even know her. Take away her gothness and her hairdresser job, what else is interesting about her except her interactions with Damien? Angie apparently is all kumbaya about her boyfriend being homophobic/biphobic and doesn't see the need to question his beliefs. She also goes on a half-page inner monologue about whether she should tell him honestly that she's not on birth control.... errr... why is that dilemma worthy? Did she see her unborn children in his eyes???? Head-scratching stuff...

The writing is clunky and inconsistent as well. Chance clearly likes the word "oxygen". Angie, who apparently doesn't want Damien's money, at one point says "He's handsome, rich, and compelling; and she was only human...". So the money did make him more attractive after all eh? Angie is also immediately able to identify art and decor that's "not just decoration" because in romanceland the only rich person with taste is usually the hero.

A clunky example After Damien's mother Justine meet an older man who flirted with her "He's very good-looking for an older gentlemen, isn't he?" Angie knew they weren't talking about Damien anymore..." No shit Sherlock.

The problem is that romance, whether in a thriller, historical, or fantasy, should be a little fun and maybe even a touch whimsical. Angie always seems halfway torn between being super stressed or super turned on, which is not a fun read. Damien always seems angry, torn, horny and stressed. So, where's the tenderness, where's the vulnerability??? They have dramatic sex scenes, but there isn't any grounding in their relationship to feel drawn into their relationship.

Damien's mother, Justine, is the only vibrant character in the entire story, who actually goes through changes over time, shows depth, range, and maturity in emotions that is entirely lacking from the MCs. I wished the book was about her. It was like reading about an older Emma (ala Austen) and she would be the only reason to read this book.
